Mary Simpson (born 1752 - 1758 (date uncertain), Virginia; died March 18, 1836, New York, New York, US) is the woman who is generally credited with originating the American tradition of celebrating Washington's birthday.〔 == Biography== Stories of Simpson's background vary. Several sources indicate that she was a slave in Washington's household while he served as President of the United States in New York City from 1789 to 1790.〔〔 〕 As a free black woman in New York, Simpson found work running a bakeshop in New York's financial district.
